On Christmas morning, I wish...
For every dog searching trash cans for breakfast, a
Filled bowl with his name printed in bright letters.
For every dog who slept fitfully last night, chained
In a frozen yard, a soft, warm bed with a person
Snoring gently nearby.
For every shelter dog, spending Christmas morning in a soiled run, a forever home, filled with sounds and
Smells of family.
For every "Christmas" puppy given today, a tolerant,
Caring owner who won't abandon you as you grow into a real dog.
For every ailing pet, enough money for your owner to
Pay the bills to make you well.
For every lost dog, a clear, safe road, and well
Marked path, to lead you home.
For every old and tired friend, a warm fire, and a
Soft bed, to ease your aches and pains.
And
For every Heart Dog at the Bridge, a moment when you know that you are remembered today, missed again, and loved forever.

CHRISTMAS AT THE RAINBOW BRIDGE
As the midnight hour approaches on Christmas Eve, a tremendous
Celebration begins. If you listen closely you will hear the exuberant sound
Of Bridge kids preparing for the remarkable moment that comes but once a Year.
Puppies romp through the tall green grass, chasing butterflies and
Rolling over and over until fits of giggles bring them to a tumbling stop.
The volume increases as kittens, cats, tigers and lions purr in pure delight
While the wings of snow-white doves gently caress the air. The babbling
Brook that runs beneath Rainbow Bridge overflows onto the edge of mossy
Banks and fins of treasured aquatic life quiver in anticipation of this
Most joyous event.
Nestled in the midst of this happy choir of Bridge kids are the littlest
Angel tots staring in awe at the majestic Christmas tree adorned with
Flowing strands of angel hair. Effervescent, twinkling stars seesaw
Elegantly from the sky and land in florious harmony upon the stoic limbs
Of Heaven's most perfect Christmas tree. Swaying to and fro in nearby
Rocking chairs are grandmothers, grandfathers, parents, aunts, uncles and
Loved ones. The sound of their whispered lullabies permeate the air as they
Sing to tiny angel babies resting quietly in their arms.
Like magic the clock approaches midnight and a great stirring is heard
In the distance. Each Bridge kid stops and listens, knowing the time is
Near, and they choose a fleecy cloud on which to snuggle. The roar of purrs
Drops to barely an audible hum, the babbling brook ripples hypnotically and
The flutter of downy feathered wings fall silent. Heaven's spirited toddlers
Climb expectantly upon the laps of angels while babies coo in tranquil
Unison.
Amidst the warm glow of candlelight, which rises from the earth below,
The arm S of the Bridge Keeper envelop the heavens and into the precious
Hands of each child and in front of each animal a holy gift is placed. With
Grand exuberance the ribbons are removed and left to fly on a tender breeze
Where they dissolve into showers of angel dust. As the golden lids of these
Heavenly gifts are raised, an amazing aura fills the sky, reaching down
To the very core of the earth. Ascending from each and every box is the
Greatest gift of all unending, unconditional, all-encompassing love.
This blessed love gently wraps itself around the cherished souls of heaven,
Warming their hearts with beacons of radiant light and bringing forth
From angels and exquisite chorus.
As the clock strikes midnight the distance between heaven and earth is
Vanished. It is at this very moment on Christmas Eve that the Bridge
Keeper, His children, angels and Bridge kids send a message to their earthly
Loved ones on the wings of this unbridled love.
Listening carefully with an open heart we will hear the familiar voice
Of our own angel whisper softly into our ear their Christmas message.."Let
Me share with you this love of mine, always and forever. When you need me
Know that I am here. I have not left you for I am in your heart where I
Belong. Our love is eternal, as is the brilliant glow of candlelight, which
Illuminates the path to the heavens and Rainbow Bridge. I wait patiently
As do you for our inevitable and glorious reunion. I love you, I love you,
I love you."

Issue Statement - Puppy Farming
18-Oct-07
Puppy farmers are those intensive volume breeders who have little regard or consideration for the basic needs and care of the dogs concerned. Some of their activities were made illegal under the Breeding and Sale of Dogs (Welfare) Act, but it is recognised that this legislation needs to be modernised. In addition other more recent legislation will help to tackle those involved in breeding without having proper regard to the welfare of animals - the EU Welfare in Transport Regulation 1/2005 and the Welfare of Animals (Transport) Order 2006, and now, the Animal Welfare Act, which for the first time introduces a requirement to promote welfare.
Puppy farmers tend to breed dogs for profit alone. As a result, they will typically
- breed from bitches too often and from too young an age
- cram dogs into unsuitable kennelling with no environmental consideration
- only feed dogs enough to survive and breed
- not give proper veterinary care or vaccinations and
- transport and sell pups when they are too young to leave their mothers.
As a result dogs born and reared in puppy farms tend to be far more susceptible to developing health and temperament problems.
Puppies bred by puppy farmers can sometimes be found for sale in pet shops or may be advertised on the internet and in newspapers, often from a breeder who has many different breeds of dog for sale.
The Kennel Club, Dogs Trust, RSPCA, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, LGA, LACORS (on behalf of local authorities and the LGA) and DEFRA have worked together to see what needs to be done to deal effectively with the problem of puppy farming. Defra Ministers accept that the Act dealing with the breeding and sale of dogs needs to be modernised.
Defra has stated:“It is essential not to rush into changing the law until after what is coming from the Kennel Club Accredited Breeder Scheme has been properly evaluated. However, there are aspects that can be tackled now without making changes to the law. Under the new Animal Welfare Act the duty to promote welfare is a major step forward in providing protection for animals that are being housed or treated in an inappropriate way”.
All of these organisations listed above advise potential dog owners to avoid buying a puppy from a puppy farmer. Please contact one of these organisations for information on the problems associated with such breeders. If you have serious concerns that there are puppy farmers in your area, please report them in the first instance to your local authority which is responsible for the licensing of commercial dog breeders.
This statement does not refer to reputable puppy breeders i.e. Those that breed at low intensities or have a licence, and have regard for the law and the welfare of the dogs and puppies

PUPPY FARM BLUES
No one to hear my lonely cry,
No one to clean my filthy sty,
No one to care if I give a scream,
I'm just a fat puppy machine.
No fun and games, nor yips and barks,
No cool pond to go splish splash,
No rustling grass or bunny tracks,
No scented woods to sprint and dash.
No chance of sun upon my back ,
Nor to hear the song of the lark,
No one to hear my desperate bark,
All there is , is the cold and the dark.
No toys to play with,
No bouncing ball,
No leads and wellies in the hall,
No one to teach me how to 'sit'.
Sometime there's change,
So I've been told ,
By the empty crates,
Of the sick and old.
No one to hear my lonely cry,
No one to care if I live or die.

Companion Dog Shows
Companion Dog Shows can be very enjoyable and great fun for all the family. Entries are made on the day, there are usually four classes for pedigree dogs and the rest are variety classes for both pedigree and non-pedigree dogs to take part. They are sometimes held in conjunction with local village fetes and similar events with part of the proceeds normally going to a named charity. Details of these events are normally available in the Dog Press, Local Press or at Ringcraft Classes in the locality in which they are being held.
Limited Dog Shows
Limited Shows are held under Kennel Club rules and regulations by some of the Breed Clubs or General Canine Societies. Entries to these Shows are restricted to Members only. In all other respects they are very similar to the rules that apply for Open Shows (see below). Entries have to be made approximately one month in advance of the Show date. Champions and CC winning dogs are not allowed to compete at these Shows.
Open Shows
Open Shows are held under Kennel Club rules and regulations by registered Breed Clubs. They are also held by General Canine Societies. Entries have to be made in advance on the appropriate entry form published in the Schedule for the Show. One thing to look out for is the timescale for the closing date for the entries; these are normally 4 to 5 weeks in advance of the date of the actual Show. There are no restrictions at Open Shows and both Champions and CC winners are eligible to compete thereby providing aspiring judges with the opportunity to both handle and assess quality exhibits. Breed Judges at these shows are in the main taken from the Judges Lists of the Breed Clubs.
Championship Shows
General Championship Shows attract many of the top dogs in the country with Breed Club Championship Shows normally attracting very large entries from across the UK and beyond, with dogs competing for the much coveted Challenge Certificates on offer. As with Open Shows, entries have to be in several weeks before the show, there are some similarities to Open Shows but with CCs on offer competition is very keen. Entry fees at General Championship Shows are more expensive, due in part to the cost of benching that has to be provided for the dogs. However, Breed Club Championship Show entry fees are a lot less as they are exempt from providing benching.
